Prof. Dr. Gert De Meerleer is staff member at the department of Radiotherapy at the University Hospital in Ghent, Belgium. He graduated in medicine at the University of Ghent in 1994. Following an internship at the Ghent University Hospital, he became a specialist in radiotherapy in 1999. From 1999 to 2000, he was part-time resident at the department of Radiotherapy and Oncology at the O.L.V. Hospital in Aalst, Belgium. In 2000, he obtained his PhD at the University of Ghent, where he also worked as a post-doctoral research fellow until 2006.  

Prof. Dr. De Meerleer is responsible for urological and gynaeco-pelvic malignancies at the Radiotherapy department in Ghent. He also coordinates two fundamental and clinical research funds concerning prostate and cervical cancer in this hospital. He is director of the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO) multidisciplinary teaching course on prostate cancer and teacher at the ESTRO teaching course on image-guided radiotherapy and at the European Kidney Cancer Association meeting. In addition, he is a member of the European Association of Urology committee on guidelines for the treatment of pain.

Prof. Dr. De Meerleer is (co-)author of over 40 peer-reviewed papers and has received several grants and awards for his research. He is a member of several national and international scientific and medical societies, including ESTRO, the genito-urinary group of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer, and the Belgian Association for Radiotherapy and Oncology.
